KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The new authority that will oversee the construction and operations at the new youth sports tournament center in Kalamazoo was tentatively set to hold their first meeting today, and they have a lot of work to do.
The panel made up of local businessmen, elected officials, tourism experts and youth sports operators will first have to build the place.
Discover Kalamazoo’s Jane Ghosh says best practice is hire a pro to manage the facility when it is up and running, which is still a few years away.
She says the commitment is to open the courts to local use on the four days of the week it’s not being used for weekend tournaments, but that will vary from week to week and season to season.
The funding is already being collected from visitors to the city who stay in local hotels, and Mayor Dave Anderson says without Jane Ghosh and Discover Kalamazoo the city would never be able to afford this.
The long range goal is to be able to open the new west side youth sports complex about the same time that the new sports event center downtown is opening in 2027.
