KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo has been awarded a $15,500 grant from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office to fund assessments for reviewing repairs to Kalamazoo City Hall.
Kalamazoo is among six Michigan communities sharing $250,000 in award grants from SHPO. The other Michigan communities are Battle Creek, East Lansing, Mason, Saginaw, and Detroit.
The city submitted an application last January for $15,500 to support the completion of a Condition Assessment Report regarding damage caused by blue-green algae to the exterior of City Hall.
The report will determine the extent of damage caused by the algae currently eating the exterior sandstone, as well as identify potential solutions to remedy this damage and prevent future damage from occurring.
It will also evaluate the areas near the front and rear doors to City Hall, where the structure has absorbed salt and is currently scaling off, and assess structural building movement caused by the size of the blocks used in the 1931 construction of City Hall and determine how to reduce current and prevent future impacts.
Kalamazoo City Hall was dedicated by Mayor S. Rudolph Light on September 1, 1931. It was designed in the Art Deco style by Weary and Alford of Chicago and was erected by Miller-Davis and equipped at a cost of $524,000.
The City Hall building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Bronson Park Historic District.
