KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board has approved funding for a Kalamazoo Public Safety program to provide bus rides for the homeless who need a way back home.
In fact, it’s called the Finding Your Way Home Program.
It is being coordinated by Public Safety’s Community Services division, ISK, and the Gospel Mission to help the unhoused return to their own communities.
Public safety officer Mary Miller says that only happens after they have contacted folks at the other end to ensure a warm handoff.
County Housing Director Mary Balkema says $15,000 in ARPA funding is being used for the effort.
County board chair Jen Strebs advised them to make it clear to the public that they aren’t just putting them on a bus.
Officer Miller says the program has already helped 67 homeless residents return home, 36 this year alone.
