CASCO TWP., MI (WKZO/WHTC) – The chairman of the Allegan County Republican Party wants to be the first person from the county to be in the state Senate in 15 years.
On Monday, Kenny Clevenger announced that his campaign has filed election documents with the Michigan Secretary of State’s office, seeking the GOP nomination in 2026. The current Casco Township treasurer wants to succeed current Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt of Lawton, who is term-limited, and is looking for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
The 35-year-old Clevenger has been the Allegan County GOP Chairman since 2022, and is in his second term as the township treasurer. He claims to be the only declared candidate for the 20th District Senate seat at this point.
Not since the late Patty Birkholz of Saugatuck was term-limited out of office in 2010 has an Allegan County resident represented the county in the state’s Upper Chamber. Rick Jones, Tonya Schuitmaker and Nesbitt have represented Allegan County in the Senate since then.
