KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County’s health director has resigned to take a new job with the state of Michigan.
Jim Rutherford became a familiar name in the news during the COVID-19 pandemic, praised and criticized for taking the actions to close the schools, and issuing requests that people stay home and wear masks when in public.
He also served as interim County Administrator for a short period during the latest search for a new administrator.
Board chair Jen Strebs says she is a big fan of his work.
Rutherford has served in the position for 13 years.
Administrator Kevin Catlin says he is good at his job.
Catlin is recommending that deputy health officer Debra Lenz be appointed to serve as interim health director.
That would give them time to find a replacement.
Her appointment is subject to approval by the county board and state health officials.
