DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Sergei Fedorov will have his iconic number 91 retired by the Detroit Red Wings in January.
He was drafted by Detroit in 1989 when the Iron Curtain was still up and he snuck away from the Soviet national team at the Goodwill Games in 1990.
Fedorov scored in his NHL debut on October 4, 1990 and helped lead the team to three Stanley Cup championships before leaving Detroit as a free agent.
His number will be the ninth retired by the Red Wings and joins former teammates Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom with the honor.
The ceremony will be before the January 12th game.
