PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage City Council could get a raise.
The Local Officers Compensation Commission is recommending a 9.4% increase for council members and a 13.6% increase for the mayor for the next two years.
That’s about the same hike that Portage city staff will see over the two years.
The LOCC considered pay rates in other similarly sized cities, and if any of the council’s responsibilities had changed since they last met two years ago, to make their recommendation.
It’s still more of a stipend than a salary, as council members will make $9,300 per year, and the mayor $12,500.
Under the state’s Home Rule Act, unless 2/3rds of the council votes to reject the increase, it will go into effect automatically in 30-days.
Unless a council member pulls it off the Consent Agenda, it may not even be mentioned at the meeting today.
