PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage city council is still taking complaints about plans to convert their waste hauling service to a single contractor.
Residents like Leah Owens are angry. She says they sat down and did the math and it shows that their rates are going to go up, way up.
“First year alone, this wonderful idea will cost my family a little over $300.”
Mayor Patricia Randall seemed to doubt her monthly calculations were correct.
“Trash pickup for everyone will be $14.04, and if you would like to leave some contact information I’m sure the city manager would be happy to run those numbers with you,” said Randall.
Les Minor says his problem is the way the city went about getting the contract approved, saying that someone needs to do a better job of explaining the changes.
“You guys did a poor job of presenting this total program and do you think what you had here when you had 150 people here. If you think that’s gonna be the end of it, it’s not,” he said.
The city already has plans to work with Waste Management to present an educational program to explain how the new service will work before it is implemented next spring.
