COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A proposed Battery Energy Storage System is continuing to create controversy in Comstock Township.
Comstock Public Schools superintendent Jeff Thoenes says the school board voted this week to oppose building the BESS near the district’s elementary school and STEM academy.
Comstock Township also has a moratorium on large energy projects, and township supervisor Ben Martin says they are reviewing the battery storage facility plans, adding they know it is a divisive issue.
The project is from Denmark-based Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and the company says it’s been in the works since 2023 and add only small amounts of toxic and flammable gases were released in extreme testing.
They say the gas is unlikely to reach either school, but the school board was not convinced.
