TEXAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A grand opening celebration will be Saturday for Kalamazoo County’s newest park
The Arthur & Mildred Woollam Nature Preserve is on land of the former Rota-Kiwan Boy Scout Camp, which opened in the 1920’s. The Boy Scouts of America Michigan Crossroads Council shut down the camp in 2020.
Kalamazoo County paid $2 million for the property in 2021 with the promise of keeping it as open, natural space. The purchase and renovations were all paid for by private donations.
Since that time, the Parks Foundation of Kalamazoo County has been raising funds for the restoration and development of this 212 acre property that includes water, woods, and trails. Project efforts have included demolition and removal of numerous structures, improvements to a(meeting hall, cabins, restrooms, and nature center, and adding a picnic shelter, fishing dock, and kayak rental station.
The grand opening celebration at the preserve in Texas Township will be held Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The event will include food, games, and prizes, as well as outdoor activities like hiking and scavenger hunts.
