KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The vice mayor says Kalamazoo should call itself “Education City.”
Jeanne Hess told us earlier this year that she had been thinking and talking about it for a while.
She says after hearing that the latest national numbers on math and reading scores continue to fall, she felt it was time to reintroduce the idea.
She says Kalamazoo isn’t just a college town, it’s a life-long learning town where education begins at birth and continues right through hospice.
Education is also a major employer, and between the new KRESA Career Connect Center, the public schools, W-Med, and the three colleges, it’s what we do.
Hess tells us that she has gotten a lot of support for the idea from educational leaders in the community and may make a formal proposal at the next city commission meeting.
Kalamazoo was once called the “Celery City” and more recently “The Mall City,” but is currently between nicknames.
