KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As we first reported two weeks ago, the Kalamazoo community is getting an early start on planning emergency shelters for the homeless this winter.
City Manager Jim Ritsema has announced the dates for local agencies to bid on providing those services, which include day and night shelters and shelter access coordination.
“Proposals are due October 9th at 5:00 PM and those can be sent to director Patrice Griffin of the Kalamazoo County Continuum of Care.”
Last year local hotels provided the space and support services were provided by a group of volunteers at the last minute, when temperatures fell dangerously low. This year they will be better organized.
“Organizations that are eligible to apply are nonprofit organizations, governmental entities and community service providers.”
The contracts would run from November of this year to March of next year.
The city is contributing $300,000 and Kalamazoo County is putting $400,000 to the pool of money that will be administered by the Continuum of Care at the United Way.
