KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County commissioners had a choice between giving $22,000 left over from public tornado remediation in Texas Township back to the township for homeowners, or creating a new emergency fund for some future storm.
They decided to do both.
Texas Township supervisor Joanna O’Rourke returned to plead for the money.
“While this is a relatively small amount of money if you are among those helped by these funds it is consequential for you and your family,” she told the county board.
But about half the commission really liked the idea of having some money in reserve, just in case there was an emergency.
Among them is vice chairman John Taylor, who said having funding in reserve means the county can be in position to better help residents.
In the end, they decided to send the money back to the township.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin informed them they already have an emergency disaster fund in their budget, they just need to put some money in it, which they now plan to do.
