KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Downtown Kalamazoo has just installed 58 new big belly recycling bins and are in the midst of a garbage blitz to clean up the town.
It’s a smart trash system that includes one bin for regular trash and a second for recycling according to Jess Thompson, who sits on the DGA and DDA boards, and is a city commission candidate.
“It’s exciting because we can look at the data now for the recycling and have something that’s really going to keep our streets cleaner,” she says.
The bins contain sensors that notify crews when they are full.
Volunteers have already spent one area cleaning up trash in the downtown area and two more dates are planned.
“On October 1st and October 8th, those all start at 6:00 at the Happy Joyful Shop. Everything will be provided for you, gloves and bags, and it’s open to the public.”
Interns from Western Michigan University will soon be able to collect data from the new bins and be able to analyze the kind of things that are being thrown away to determine how the public can be better educated on how to use them.
