PORTER TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 16-year-old autistic boy apparently walked away from a campsite and drowned in a nearby lake in Cass County’s Porter Township Saturday.
Just after 9:00 a.m. Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call that a child who had walked away from his camper while at the Willow Shores Campground on U.S. 12. The family noticed their son was missing from their trailer.
Deputies, along with medical first responders from the Southeast Public Safety Authority, Cass County Sheriff Marine Division, the Porter Township Fire Department, and the Indian Lake Fire Department searched on land and in the water of Baldwin Lake. K-9 Britton, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team, and a MedFlight helicopter also assisted in the search.
Police say K-9 Britton indicated to her handler that the boy had gone into Baldwin Lake. A drone piloted by Sheriff’s Office personnel located him under the water at approximately 3:25 p.m. and the dive team recovered his body.
The incident remains under investigation.
