KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County has scheduled a public hearing on their 2026 budget proposal Tuesday evening.
Commissioners will first get a briefing on the impact that the new Michigan state budget will have on their revenue stream and discuss other items at their afternoon session.
The hearing will be part of their evening meeting.
Administrator Kevin Catlin says they have been preparing for whatever state lawmakers came up with.
“We’ve been working with our lobbyist to keep close tabs and the Michigan Association of Counties.”
A memo states that deliberations on revenue sharing have resulted in “a budget shortfall of $248,000, which will require further discussion to determine the appropriate course of action.”
Catlin says one option is extra revenue set aside in their fund balance.
“That’s why we’ve recommended utilizing the 25% fund balance ratios that we could have some some dollars there to be able to address some shortfalls.”
The proposal also calls for a higher millage rate of 7.8617, that is just over a 5% increase.
That increased millage would add over $4.67 million more to homeowners’ bills next year.
