DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Violent crime rates in the city of Detroit continue to fall and are below the 60-year lows set in 2024.
Officials say murders are down 15% from last year with 132 so far in 2025 compared to 155 last year, and non-deadly shooting and carjackings are down over 20%.
There have been 64 carjackings through the third quarter of 2025, while there were 90 at this time last year and 192 in 2022.
Police Chief Todd Bettison says much of the success is due to stronger partnerships between local and federal law enforcement, especially having federal prosecutors in Detroit Police Department precincts.
Mayor Mike Duggan adds the crime reduction is proof the city does not need the federal government to send in the National Guard. Vice President JD Vance made that offer at a speech outside of Detroit last month.
