PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It has never been easier to bet on sports in Michigan.
One Portage city councilmember, concerned about appearances, decided to make perfectly clear that a high school basketball team in town was not going into gambling.
The Portage Northern Lady Huskies team asked the city to recognize its non-profit status so they can seek a charitable gaming license. Councilmember Jihan Young felt it might need explanation.
“Especially with the language because there could be some confusion in terms of gaming,” Young says.
It’s not so they can gamble, its so they can raise money.
“This will allow them to do things like the 50-50 raffles or any kind of fundraising for their basketball team and this is no different than any other non-profit.”
The request passed unanimously.
