KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners have special meetings planned this week as the search for a new city manager is nearing its conclusion, and the public is invited to participate in some of them.
A public session will be held tomorrow downtown with an opportunity to meet the candidates one-on-one.
Wednesday, Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess says the finalists will be taken on a tour of the city, including city operations, concluding the day at Kalamazoo City Hall for the main event.
Each candidate will be presented with the same set of questions, just to be fair.
Commissioners won’t make the decision immediately but put it off until their regularly scheduled meeting next Monday, to give the public time to voice their opinion. Then the seven commissioners could pick a favorite, and make an offer.
There is also a chance they could decide they need to ask more questions or reject them all and go another round.
The four finalists are: Malcolm Hankins, the Deputy City Manager in Des Moines, Iowa; Odis Jones, a Western Michigan University graduate and former city manager in Texas; Elle Cole, the acting City Manager in Saline, Michigan; and Laura Lam, Kalamazoo’s chief operating officer.
