KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools have joined with the Kalamazoo Arts Council on a capital campaign to make upgrades at the 100-year-old Chenery Auditorium in the Community Education Center.
The historic auditorium at the heart of the old Kalamazoo Central High School on Westnedge Avenue is known for its excellent acoustics. District finance director Laura Kayser presented the proposal to school trustees at Thursday’s meeting.
She says the school district will be contributing $500,000 in bond funding to assist with the improvements.
Trustee Carol McGlinn says it makes a lot of school and community cultural events possible, that might not be otherwise.
Everyone from Diana Krall, Dr. John, the Detroit Symphony, and Kalamazoo Central graduate and baseball Hall of Famer Derek Jeter have appeared on its stage, along with many more local teens and performers over the last century.
