KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Among the unresolved items in this year’s Kalamazoo County budget is the future of the Kalamazoo County Fair.
After reviewing a consultant’s report on whether to bring back the fair at their last meeting, the commission remained at odds.
“I mean we’re at the same point right now that we were exactly 1 year ago today, it’s almost like we’re spinning our wheels,” said Vice Chair John Taylor.
The consultant, Dr. Lori Mitchell-Dixon with Great Lakes Market Research, says it comes down to what commissioners decide a fair should look like, and if there is support in the community for it, based on her data.
“18% say I definitely wanna go to a fair. I’m not telling you if 18% is a good enough number or a low number, you get to decide if 18% want it,” she says.
They could continue with just a 4H showcase, go with a full blown County Fair with a midway, rides and food vendors, or something in between.
They will revisit the issue at their 4 p.m. meeting Tuesday.
Their decision could have budget implications, with the final vote on 2026 budget is on the evening agenda.
