LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Whitmer is calling on the Trump administration to halt the disruption to the SNAP during the federal government shutdown.
The shutdown began October 1 without a budget being approved by Congress and signed by President Trump.
Whitmer and a group of governors made the request in a letter.
SNAP benefits help feed 42 million people.
In Michigan, this could leave 1.4 million people without enough money to pay for groceries.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered states last week to pause SNAP distribution beginning tomorrow.
The state will be providing $4.5-million to the Food Bank Council of Michigan to help with the increased demand at food banks around the state from the SNAP stop.
The Michigan Senate also passed a bill Thursday to provide $71-million in emergency funding to cover the halt of SNAP benefits Saturday, but it has not passed the state House.
