KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The construction of a new $41.5 million El Sol Elementary in Kalamazoo Township will be back on the Kalamazoo Public Schools board agenda Thursday night.
Last year, the decision to move the school out of the Vine Neighborhood stirred up opposition among the local homeowners, but support from El Sol parents and school officials who want the new facility.
This time, Superintendent Darrin Slade says the decision will be whether they should also expand it.
That decision has to be made early, because it will impact the size and design of the new school building.
Slade says he wants to hear from the community.
It was decided last year that the new site on Baker Street in Kalamazoo Township provides plenty of space for the immersive Spanish language curriculum, whether it expands or not.
The new facility will be funded by bonds already approved by voters.
The Baker Street site held Brucker Elementary for several decades before it was closed and demolished.
