KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County commissioners have one leftover piece of business from their recently approved 2026 budget that they plan to take up tomorrow.
The board has set aside $200,000 for the past two years to fund an organized competition to pay for community projects that meet their priorities. The first year, it didn’t happen so this time they have $400,000 to spend and a partially completed process for whittling down the list of applicants.
They were expecting to do it before the budget was approved, but documents didn’t get sent out and the board put off the final cut until this meeting.
The preliminary votes have already been taken.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says all they have to do is make the final cuts.
Board chair Jen Strebs says they can focus on those programs which have already gotten the most board member approval.
They received over 60 applications for the limited fund.
Strebs says this is the first year they have distributed community funding this way, and they hope to make the process smoother next year.
