SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Brazilian petrochemical firm Braskem said on Monday it has agreed to pay 1.2 billion reais ($222 million) to the northeastern state of Alagoas, the latest compensation deal related to the damages caused by its salt mines operations.
Braskem has paid 139 million reais and will pay the remainder in ten annual installments, the company said in a filing, adding that 467 million reais had already been provisioned.
Officials have said Braskem’s salt mines destabilized the ground in areas of Maceio, the capital of Alagoas, in 2018, damaging buildings and forcing tens of thousands of residents out their homes.
