KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools has a more aggressive approach to school truancy than most area districts, and it’s paying off.
Besides the usual efforts, they have hired a truancy officer, and this weekend, the superintendent and staffers will once again be knocking on the doors of students with attendance problems.
Dr. Lisa Dewey, KPS’s Student Services Director, said they went out last month with a list of 87 students with chronic absences to find out why, and to see if there was something they could do to help.
She says the results of the Knock and Talk strategy showed results when they began it last year and continues to produce attendance increases.
She says they have added 9 new cases to their list and will be headed out on Saturday to hit the new ones, and the ones they missed last time.
