HUDSONVILLE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 19, 2025) – As the green flag for the Thanksgiving holiday travel season drops next Wednesday, safety officials are emphasizing several items for motorists to remember as they hit the roadways.
Triple-A used a briefing at its service hub between Grand Rapids and Holland on Tuesday to highlight its “Tow to Go” program, offering a “safety net” safe ride for all would-be impaired drivers and their vehicles from the evening of November 26th through the dawn hours of December 1st. The night before Thanksgiving has been dubbed “Blackout Wednesday,” as its one of the biggest bar and drinking evenings of the year, along with one of the nation’s busiest travel days.
Other road hazards such as distracted driving, driving under adverse weather conditions, and avoidance of deer were also brought up by Michigan State Police Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson, as Monday kicked off the annual Crash Responder Safety Week, as sponsored by the US Federal Highway Administration.
Michigan and all other states has its “move over” law for motorists to change lanes and reduce speed whenever an emergency vehicle with its lights on is stopped on a road shoulder. However, the Auto Club cited a study showing 46 emergency responders last year died after being struck by vehicles while working roadside incidents, and that 36 percent of motorists disregarded this law when real-world video samples of over 12,000 vehicles were reviewed.
