KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo’s homeless population will be getting something for the holidays that will last through to spring.
Multiple agencies have signed on to the most extensive plan yet to provide emergency shelter for the homeless this winter.
They have authorized contracts with three groups to provide shelter and services for during the cold months, and additional beds if it really gets dangerously cold.
Housing Resources Incorporated will provide shelter coordination and support services.
Continuum of Care director Patrice Griffin says on top of the $300,000 from Kalamazoo City Hall, the county board and her group are contributing the rest for a total of just over three-quarters of a million.
But she says it may not be enough especially if it’s a really cold winter, and they may be back asking for more funding.
At the same time, what they’re doing is special.
The contracts will be in place through the end of next March.
The National Weather Service is predicting a weak El Nino system will move in, which could mean colder and snowier conditions in west Michigan later on this winter.
