KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Don Cooney left a message before he stepped down as Kalamazoo city commissioner last week, one impacted by the state of affairs nationally and the airing of Ken Burns’ American Revolution.
He noted the PBS documentary stressed the founders went beyond simply seeking independence, also recognizing the inalienable rights and the dignity and worth of each person, and we see how far we have strayed from those goals.
He says the number one problem in Kalamazoo is poverty, and he says he is leaving a list of suggestions on how the city can address that with the clerk.
He says the city has to rededicate itself to addressing that issue.
He worked in a quote from Senator Ted Kennedy’s parting speech from the legislature to end his comments.
Cooney, a retired Western Michigan University sociology professor, says he plans to spend more time with his family.
