KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo has big plans for a structure that used to house district court before they built the new courthouse downtown.
The Arthur Washington Jr. Crosstown Center will continue to house Department of Public Safety Headquarters, but will also be remodeled into new office space for the Planning and I.T. Department, which are currently sharing cramped rental space downtown.
Deputy City Planner Christina Anderson says the $11-million remodel will also include a large new community hub space that can be used for a variety of city and community purposes.
She says it will be designed so it can serve a variety of different meetings.
Public Safety Chief Dave Boyson says some of the space will be used by his department for training, a new public entrance and other needed facilities.
Mayor David Anderson says they will be getting new space for a cost that is far less than a lot of other public projects recently completed and planned, and may save them money in the long run.
The 100,000 square foot building at Crosstown Parkway and South Burdick Street began life as a Sears and Roebuck Department store in the 1950s.
