KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says officers responded to two separate violent incidents Tuesday night, including a non-fatal shooting and an unrelated armed robbery. Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
At approximately 8:50 p.m., dispatch received a report of a shooting near the intersection of Portage Street and Bryant Street. Officers arrived and located a 27-year-old male victim suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Officers established a perimeter and conducted a K-9 track, but the suspect was not located. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. KDPS says at this time the wound does not appear to be life-threatening. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to review evidence and follow up on available leads.
At about the same time officers were also dispatched to the 500 block of North Edwards Street for a report of an armed robbery at a local drop-in center. A 45-year-old male victim reported being robbed of his backpack by three individuals, who fled southbound on foot.
A K-9 track there also did not locate the suspects at that time.
After more investigation, officers identified multiple individuals believed to be involved. Possible suspects were later located during the investigation. A pneumatic handgun believed to be associated with the incident was recovered during a subsequent consent search for a residence.
An 18-year-old male and 19-year-old male were taken into custody and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges related to armed robbery. One was additionally lodged on a felony firearm charge involving a pneumatic handgun. They were scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
