SAUGATUCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Northbound I-196 near Saugatuck remains closed this afternoon after a semi-tractor trailer ran off the overpass and burst into flames Monday morning.
The Allegan Coutny Sheriff’s Office says just after 7:00 a.m. law enforcement and first responders were sent to I-196 and Old Allegan Road for the report of a semi on fire. By the time they arrived the driver of the truck had already been assisted out of the cab by a passerby, but the semi was fully engulfed in flames.
The driver of the semi was the only occupant at the time of the crash and was transported to the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Saugatuck Township Fire Chief Greg Janik told WZZM TV it “was a miracle” that the driver was able to walk away from the crash.
Police say the semi was traveling northbound on I-196 when it lost control and crashed off the overpass landing on the road below. At this time northbound I-196 is closed while the debris is removed and the Michigan Department of Transportation can complete an inspection on the bridge. There is no estimated time on when it will reopen.
Southbound I-196 is open at this time
