HOLLAND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A large turnout of law enforcement and emergency responders is expected Tuesday for the funeral of Hamilton Fire Chief and former Allegan County Sheriff David Haverdink.
The 74-year-old was hit by a passing vehicle December 23 while he was attending to a medical incident on Lincoln Road (M-40) neat 136th Avenue around 6:00 p.m. Haverdink was taken to U-M Health West in Wyoming with critical injuries and died Christmas Day.
He was a 51-year veteran of the department, with more than four decades of service as its chief. He was also a two-term Allegan County Sheriff, from 1993 to 2001.
The funeral will at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Central Wesleyan Church in Holland. Following the funeral, a procession will take place leading from Central Wesleyan to Riverside Cemetery in Hamilton.
The involved public safety agencies are requesting that motorists and pedestrians keep safety in mind while not blocking any roadways, public or private drives, or right of ways as the procession moves to the cemetery. The procession will likely proceed through the area of Lincoln Rd (M-40)/136th Ave sometime between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office says that due to the increased amount of traffic, law enforcement will be on scene shutting the intersection of Lincoln Rd/136th Ave down to ensure all motorists traveling through the area are safe. For those who are able, it is advised to seek an alternate route to avoid delays through the area.
At this time, the family and fire department are requesting the ceremony at the cemetery to be a private event as they lay Chief Haverdink to rest.
47th St between 136th Avenue and Lincoln Road will be shut down during the cemetery service.
