KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – How many homeless people are living in Kalamazoo County?
Counting them in a homeless census is a federal requirement to be taken in late January to get the head count and gauge how much support communities need.
Last year, the population here jumped by 19%, and it may have grown even larger since.
Jeff Messer says he is getting the word out from the Continuum of Care that they need volunteers on the evening of January 22nd to help with the count.
Messer says getting the shelter count only takes a phone call, it’s counting those that aren’t in shelters that requires extra help.
He says they are trying some new outreach efforts this year by promoting the Point in Time, or PIT Count, ahead of time.
Anyone who would like to help can register online.
Messer says there will be some training beforehand.
The PIT Count will take place on Thursday, January 22nd from 6 p.m. to midnight.
They will feed the volunteers before they go out.
