PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A pair of teens face charges, including one for possession of a firearm, after fleeing from Portage police Thursday.
According to a news release, officers with the Portage Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the 2100 block of Lovebird Court for a report of two juvenile males smoking marijuana near an apartment building. The caller also reported that one of the juveniles was in possession of a firearm.
As officers arrived in the area, one officer entered the apartment building and heard a commotion upstairs. On the second floor the officer found a juvenile male hanging from a second-story window. The juvenile jumped from the window, landed outside, and fled on foot.
Officers pursued the suspect through the Lovebird Court and Jacamar Court area. After a brief foot chase, the juvenile was apprehended and taken into custody.
A loaded handgun with an extended magazine was recovered from his possession. The 13-year-old was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home pending charges.
At about the same time, a second juvenile male was seen running in the area. Police gave chase as the suspect ran from Jacamar Court toward Kalarama Avenue, jumping several fences in the process.
After temporarily losing sight of the suspect, officers conducted a canvass of the area. The juvenile was located hiding underneath a vehicle in the 2100 block of Kalarama Avenue. The 14-year-old was released a parent pending charges.
