KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County held another closed session on a proposal that they assume stewardship for the Asylum Lake Preserve last night before voting to approve a memorandum of understanding.
That just means they will start negotiations with Western Michigan University officials as WMU currently maintains the 274-acre parcel on the city of Kalamazoo’s western border.

We later asked chair Jen Strebs to clarify exactly what the county has in mind for the nature preserve, which has seen commercial and industrial encroachment for decades.
No timetable for the process has been announced, but public hearings will be held before any final decisions will be made.
Residents have made it clear that if there is a ‘third rail’ in Kalamazoo politics, it’s threatening Asylum Lake.
