PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Construction is expected to begin next year after the Portage Public Schools Board of Education this week approved a $2 million purchase of land to build a new Angling Road Elementary.
School officials say the current property isn’t large enough to support the open-concept design the district has used for its new elementary schools. The 14.79-acre property at 5201 Angling Road is just across the street from the current school building.
After an initial $175 million bond was passed in 2020 to fund a multi-year plan to rebuild five elementary schools and renovate a sixth, voters approved an additional $132.4 million bond in 2025 to fund construction for three of the six schools. The district said the extra money was needed because of rising costs.
Classes will continue at the current Angling Road Elementary until the new building opens, which is projected for 2029.
