SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 14, 2026) – A 57-year-old man may have escaped with his life on Friday evening in South Haven, but he and another person could face legal consequences for their actions.
According to South Haven Area Emergency Services, the unnamed man, only mentioned as being from “out-of-state,” had apparently been onto the south pier near the lighthouse end when waves from Lake Michigan swept him off around 5:40 PM. A second person with that man was able to throw out a life ring, pulling the victim out of the waters and to safety. The victim was taken to Bronson-South Haven Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
The piers in South Haven were closed to the public at the time due to high wind and wave conditions. SHAES officials pointed out in a social media posting that those who are caught on those piers when they are closed are subject to a $1,000 fine.
The incident remains under investigation.
