MARTIN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An Allegan County nine-year-old will be honored Friday for performing lifesaving hands-only CPR at his church.
Logan Vangemert is a fourth grader at Brandon Elementary in Martin. he learned hands-only CPR through the American Heart Association’s Kid’s Heart Challenge program at his school in early February. One day after watching the CPR video, Logan was in the children’s room at his church when the male supervisor male fell to the floor from sudden cardiac arrest.
The heart association says the mans wife began to perform hands-only CPR but froze. Vangemert stepped in and performed hands-only CPR for several minutes with other adults until an automated external defibrillator (AED) was located and used to restart the mans heart.
The man has made a full recovery after undergoing quadruple bypass surgery and having a pacemaker placed in his heart. He was released from the hospital in late February and is recovering at home.
A CPR Hero award will be presented to Vangemert during an assembly at the school Friday morning.
