PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Two area meetings tonight could each draw quit, for very different reasons.
The Portage City Council will hold a public hearing on its plans to put a one-year moratorium on data center and battery storage facility permits. City officials say there aren’t any such projects in the works, but they want to get a jump-start as plans for projects in other local communities are popping up.
Opponents of the data centers and Battery Energy Storage Systems say they present environmental and safety risks while sucking up resources, while those in favor say there is a lot of demand for the facilities, which means of money for cities and townships. The State of Michigan is also actively promoting them with tax incentives and rules that limit local authorities’ ability to stop them.
The Portage City Council will meet at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Portage City Hall.
Anticipating a big turnout at tonight’s 6:00 p.m. Comstock Township board meeting, it has been moved to Comstock High School. The hot subject is Supervisor Ben Martin, who is facing a recall effort and is fighting complaints over his ownership of his cider brewery Soil Friends. He and his wife brew and sell hard cider on site alongside goats, chickens, seasonal baked good and produce.
