LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson says President Donald Trump is breaking the law with his executive order on elections and says she will challenge it in court.
Trump signed the “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections” order Tuesday evening, directing several federal agencies to be more active in verifying voter eligibility, regulating mail-in ballots, and pursuing potential crimes related to elections.
Benson says states run elections, not the President and adds “this executive order is illegal on its face.”
The order calls for the U.S. Postal Service to create national standards for mail-in and absentee ballots.
Benson says it came about after Congress failed to pass Trump’s federal voting legislation.
