KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – With this year’s culminating event just over one month away, Girls on the Run of Greater Kalamazoo says it needs a few hundred more volunteers to register ahead of its annual 5K celebration. at Kalamazoo Valley Community College Saturday, May 16, 2026.
This year, 730 third-to-fifth-grade girls from thirty-eight schools in the greater Kalamazoo area will participate in the untimed run at Kalamazoo Valley Community College Saturday, May 16, and about 200 volunteers are needed for it to run smoothly.
“Volunteers are an essential part of fulfilling our mission and also the success of the 5K celebration,” GOTRGK Program Manager Christine Chessler-Stull said. “Whether they’re cheering on the girls, providing water at hydration stations, or serving in any number of safety roles, our volunteers ensure that runners have everything they need to cross the finish line!”
Volunteer roles can be signed up for online HERE based on an individual’s schedule and interest. Volunteers who sign up by April 20 at 5pm will be guaranteed a 5K t-shirt. All volunteers will be required to have a background check.
More than 33,000 girls have completed the 5K in Greater Kalamazoo since the program began in 2002. Organizers say they walk away from the finish line with a new set of skills “that will help them lead joyful, healthy, and confident lives.”
Led by volunteer coaches, the girls train and prepare for the run twice a week meeting from mid-March to May.
