KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says it has interviewed and cleared one person of interest in the shooting death of a security guard at nightclub over the weekend, but is still looking for another person who was at the large party.
27-year-old Montine Wiley Jr. of Kalamazoo was shot and killed around 11:00 p.m. Saturday while working an event at Green Door Distilling in the 400 block of East North Street.
KDPS officials Tuesday afternoon said two individuals previously shown in released photos wearing blue and red shirts were persons of interest. The individual in the blue shirt has been identified and interviewed and they are no longer seeking information on him.
The individual in the red shirt remains unidentified, and identifying and interviewing the subject is currently their top priority.
Investigators are asking anyone who attended the event to come forward, especially if they have photos or videos, particularly from the parking lot or waiting area.
In addition to owning his own security company, Wiley was a regular speaker at youth anti-gun violence meetings through the Kalamazoo Alliance to Prevent Gun Violence, basing his anti-gun violence lessons on his own history with crime as a young teen.
KDPS also said Tuesday that a few names were circulating on social media, but investigators had already interviewed them and ruled them out. They urged people to “not share speculation” and said instead that any tips should be directed to KDPS at (269)337-8139 or Silent Observer at (269)343-2100.
