KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Green Door Distilling in Kalamazoo says the event Saturday night was for a Western Michigan University-affiliated event with the Black Student Union renting the facility.
However, it was promoted as part of a “house crawl,” and security guard Montine Wiley, Jr. was shot and killed at the event.
The distillery says police were called just before Wiley was shot because the crowd had grown larger than had been expected.
Officials say they were concerned people who were not WMU students were showing up.
