KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Western Michigan University president Edward Montgomery presided over his last Board of Trustees meeting this week, receiving praise and honors while thanking the university community for their support.
He has served during a turbulent time for higher education, facing declines in enrollment, financial and political challenges, not to mention a global pandemic.
Board president Shelly Edgerton says during his eight-year tenure, he raised a billion dollars in private donations.
Edgerton announced that the WMU program that helps students in need with academic and financial assistance, that he helped create, will be named for him.
Former trustee Bill Johnston chaired the search committee that picked Dr. Montgomery.
Montgomery thanked everyone in the university community for helping him make it all possible.
A 25-member search committee narrowed the applicants to replace Dr. Montgomery to four finalists who have all visited campus for interviews.
A special board meeting is planned for next week to name their next president.
