KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A lawsuit against the federal government has been filed by three Western Michigan University international students along with other students from Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Attorney Adriana Kemish with the Law Office of Amy Maldonado says they have sued the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Immigration Enforcement over the termination of their status in the Student and Exchange Visitor System.
The government says their SEVIS status was terminated for “otherwise failing to maintain status: individual identified in criminal records check and/or has had their VISA revoked.”
WMU says six students have had their SEVIS status terminated, with one being a 27-year-old man from India who completed probation in January and had a misdemeanor for retail fraud dismissed, while a second WMU student is 27-year-old man from Nepal who had one traffic violation dismissed after he paid a fine.
A third WMU student is a woman from China who is married to a U.S. citizen, has a daughter who is a U.S. citizen, and is pregnant.
She got a speeding ticket in December 2020 in Nebraska, and the ticket was dismissed in 2021.
