It marks the day in 1971 when the Occupational Safety and Health Act, or OSHA, became law. David Pawloski, with the Southwest Michigan Labor council says a worker somewhere dies every 99 minutes, from a work-related disease or accident.
No one will get the day off, no banks will close or parades will be held but…
A 2024 study issued by the AFL-CIO says while new safety regulations since the passage of OSHA has made the workplace safer, but Black and Latino workers remain at greater risk, and new hazards, such as workplace violence, heat and infectious disease still need to be addressed.
