GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The second-degree murder trial of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr has begun in Kent County Circuit Court.
Schurr is facing the charge for shooting and killing Patrick Lyoya while the two were struggling over his Taser after a traffic stop in April 2022.
That is Wayne Butler, who witnessed the fight as it happened near his home and testified Lyoya made the first mistake by getting out of his car during the traffic stop.
Prosecutor Chris Becker says Lyoya was driving without a license, his plate wasn’t legal, and he was driving drunk but also told the jury the shooting was not justified.
