PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Wednesday, May 7th will be the first anniversary of a tornado that ripped across southern Kalamazoo County, from the Colony Woods development in Texas Township to Pavilion Estates and beyond in Pavilion Township, doing most of its damage in the city of Portage.
Portage Deputy City Manager Adam Herringa says they received a million in state aid for local businesses, to cover losses not made whole by insurance, and received 53 applications for far more than that sum.
They capped payouts at $30,000, which they have been distributing.
He says the United Way has also designated $250,000 they received for small businesses.

Some businesses have been rebuilt, some may never return, and some, like the FedEx distribution center near the airport, remain under reconstruction.
