KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Consumers Energy says they have over 185,000 customers who are currently without power as a result of the overnight storms.
The utility estimates many of those in Kalamazoo, Allegan, Van Buren and Calhoun counties should have the power back on by some time today.
Consumers has around 500 crews working to restore the power. They are also working to get more crews into the state to help.
Winds of up to 70 miles-an-hour ripped through west Michigan overnight along with hail and several reported tornado sightings. The National Weather Service is working to confirm how many twisters hit the area along with their strength, as there were nine tornado warnings issued.
Consumers Energy has several safety tips, including being alert to crews working along roads and slow down or stop to wait for traffic to clear; stay at least 25 feet from downed power lines and call those in; don’t use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio, or near any air intakes; and don’t trim the trees or remove branches yourself.
